A leisure battery (the standard UK term; 'house battery' elsewhere) is built for deep, repeated discharge: lights, fridge, water pump, USB and 230V devices. A starter battery, by contrast, is built to deliver one big burst to crank the engine and stay nearly full — flatten it overnight and you don't start in the morning.
Two chemistries dominate van builds: flooded/AGM lead-acid (cheapest, heaviest, shallower usable depth of discharge), and LiFePO4 lithium (more usable capacity per kg, thousands of cycles, the modern default). Lead-acid is conventionally sized on about half its nameplate capacity being usable, against nearly all of it for LiFePO4 — a design rule of thumb, not a measurement we made, so check your own battery's datasheet. That is why most new builds size in lithium.
