Registering a converted van as a camper, worldwide
A converted van doesn't become a legal 'motorhome' just because it has a bed in the back — every market in this table has its own registration category, and most have their own inspection or approval step before the vehicle is retitled. This table names the authority, the category and (where sourced) the conversion path and inspection for each of the 19 markets this Beacon tracks. Several cells are marked as not established rather than filled with a guess — registration is often sub-national, and a single national page rarely covers the full conversion path. Norway and Czechia stand out here: both name the exact ministry/agency, the exact category, AND the exact approval mechanism, because the underlying process is genuinely a single national one (not fifty state rulebooks or a canton-by-canton lottery).

Washington: habitation with cooking or sewage disposal in a solid body shell, used exclusively for recreation. Texas: eligibility letter from a TxDMV Regional Service Center first | Varies. Washington requires a State Patrol inspection in defined cases; Texas vets documents through a Regional Service Center | flhsmv.gov ↗ |

| NZ New Zealand | NZTA Waka Kotahi — national, single rulebook | Motorhome | A motorhome built locally needs Low Volume Vehicle certification or Heavy Vehicle Specialist certification. Dimension limits: 2.55 m wide, 4.3 m high, 12.6 m long (11.5 m if towing) — some imported motorhomes exceed these and cannot be used on NZ roads | LVV certification plus Warrant of Fitness. Self-containment certification is a SEPARATE process from WoF and LVV | nzta.govt.nz ↗ |
