Damp Meter (Protimeter)

A damp meter (often referred to by the brand name Protimeter) is a handheld tool that reads moisture content in a van or motorhome's body panels and floor during a habitation check, usually at a set of standard points around doors, windows, roof lights and the floor.

There is no legal damp threshold for a habitation check — this is a trade norm, not a regulation. In practice, workshops treat a reading of up to roughly 15% as within the normal range for a panel; a higher reading is treated as a flag for further investigation rather than an automatic fail. After a repair, the standard practice is to re-test roughly three months later to confirm the reading has genuinely stabilised rather than just dried out temporarily.
