Not a ranking — a checklist per provider. Every row is built from that provider's own published page (breakdown-cover terms, product page, or policy summary document), checked at the date shown. Where a provider's own page did not state something relevant (geographic scope, self-build stance, price), the cell says so rather than filling the gap with a third-party estimate. None of the nine is marked as a top pick: insurance is a regulated product and the right answer depends on the reader's own vehicle, country and use.

Verdict — there is no single best; there is a checklist None of these nine is presented as a recommendation: coverage, price and eligibility for a motorhome, campervan or self-build depend on the specific vehicle, country of residence and route, and only a provider's own quote can confirm them. What the published pages do show is real variation worth checking before assuming anything: Caravan Guard's own FAQ explicitly excludes any self-converted or self-built motorhome, while Comfort Insurance markets a named Self-Build Campervan product on its homepage — the opposite stance on the exact question a self-build owner needs answered first. Breakdown-club cover (AA, RAC, ADAC, ANWB, TCS, ÖAMTC) is frequently tiered or add-on-based rather than automatically European in scope, and Macif's own policy document separates its geographic damage cover from a narrower legal-assistance exclusion list.
